Avoiding conflict in a relationship

Posted on

When it comes to relationships, things tend to get a bit more complicated, especially with respect to managing conflict, as this is the place where we are most vulnerable.

On the other hand, being in a healthy relationship is the key to living a fulfilling life. The question is, how do we deal with conflict in such a way that makes it beneficial instead of damaging?

How we deal with conflict

If when you’re under pressure, you are more likely to compromise or hide your true feelings under a nervous smile, and afterwards lose sleep over the situation, and then conflicts in relationships trigger anxiety in you.

This emotional reaction can most of the times be traced back to childhood. If your parents were too strict or short-tempered, then facing a conflict as an adult triggers this trauma and your body might initiate panic reactions such as sweating, shaking or heart palpitations.

To protect yourself, you might turn to childhood defences such as denial, repression or depersonalization, and remain distant from others.

Similar reactions can be triggered if past experiences included aggressive peers or siblings or a neglecting caretaker. However, facing conflict in a constructive way when it arises is always a better idea than either being aggressive or avoiding it all together.

This change in approach means making the leap from conflict-avoidance to conflict-resilience.

Understand yourself and your partner

Being in a healthy relationship doesn’t mean that every moment will be perfect. Building a strong connection implies having honest conversations and working through problems and conflicts together, in order to the find the right solution for both parties.

One thing to keep in mind is that there are always two sides to the same story and, more importantly, two perceptions of the same situation. Starting since childhood, we create layers and filters through which we see the world.

These come from our culture, education and experiences, and we use them to constantly make sense of the world around us and try to place every new experience in a previous pattern in order to trigger the most suitable response.

However, this mechanism also means that sometimes we forget about these filters and believe that our partner is just wrong. In order to enjoy a healthy and fulfilling relationship, you should first acknowledge that your partner might be right as well, and try seeing things through his or her perspective.

Avoid snap judgements, which usually come as a natural response, and take the time to fully understand what it is exactly that triggered the conflict.

Moreover, don’t get lost into trying to figure out which one of the two is right. This is trap as somehow, you both are. Instead, ask your partner what he or she thinks and look for solutions together.

How to exercise during winter

Posted on

In a society where personal image matters a lot, more and more people want to look good and feel good. The key towards a great, healthy body and creative mind is to exercise as much as possible, eat ”clean” food and avoid stress.

It is hard to keep up with this lifestyle, especially if you work a lot in stressful conditions, you don’t have enough time to eat regularly and the only exercise you can do is jogging in the morning. If this is the case, winter is not your friend; during this season you are tempted to give up on your healthy habits.

Researchers say that even people with thorough fitness routines can be tempted to give up on their hobby during the cold season. This happens because of bad weather, short days, lack of mood caused by the dull atmosphere and other factors.

However, you should keep exercising when sunny days are over because this gives you energy and keeps you healthy throughout the winter. In case you are wondering, there are some tricks that will help you enjoy your exercising adventure even on snow.

Firstly, it is very important to remain motivated. Studies show that during winter our body tends to store more bad fats than during summer, so it’s necessary to keep working out if you don’t want to gain weight. Also, now is the perfect time to lose some annoying kilos since calories are burnt faster if you exercise in less favorable conditions.

Secondly, you can have a lot of fun if you choose to go out in the snow instead of lying in bed all day. You can work out without realizing if you do some winter sports like skiing, ice skating, snowboarding, sledding or even making a snowman. If you are a fan of jogging, you can do this on the snow and you will have better results because your brain and lungs will receive more oxygen and clean air while you run.

Next to these activities, you can participate in group exercises that can be performed indoor like aerobics, Pilates, dance classes or you can go to the gym. Remember that safety should never be neglected, so you always have to warm up your body before the effort, no matter if you choose indoor or outdoor activities. In this way you can prevent accidents.

Thirdly, think about the perfect sports outfit for cold days. When you are outside, you will need a lightweight top made of technical fabric, fleece for dry weather, some leggings, running tights, tracksuit trousers or shorts, a hat, gloves and some waterproof item in case it rains. If you are working out inside, you can use your regular outfit.

Finally, don’t forget that winter is a season that allows you to prepare your body for spring and summer, so it’s time to give it some special attention after the intense workout. You can go to a pool or sauna, make an appointment for a massage session or simply stay at home and read or watch TV.

How to stick to a jogging routine

Posted on

If you’ve recently decided to lose a bit of weight or you’re just trying to get back on the healthy living bandwagon, you might consider going out jogging. Well, the fact is that this type of exercise doesn’t work if you’re looking to lose weight, but you’re only committing to going out and running once a week.

As with any other type of exercise plan, you have to understand that you need to put in a bit of effort to achieve your goals. It might be a good idea to create a schedule and stick to it as best as possible. Choose the days where you have more time available. You can jog after work in the evening, early in the morning after waking up, or you can jog on the weekends.

The sky’s the limit when it comes to the changes you can make on your body. Just keep in mind that it is often better to start sooner rather than later.

One tip that I can give you is to use your favorite headphones and listen to your favorite music. Of course, if what you usually listen to is quiet chillout or lounge music, I wouldn’t recommend it for the purpose. You need something that’s upbeat, and that has a catchy rhythm that can help you relax and feel good about working out.

Another thing that I want to point out is that you should love your body no matter its size or shape. Many people start doing jogging because they want to shed some pounds and that’s okay, but it is their prerogative. No one can tell you how you are supposed to look. If you feel comfortable in your skin, you won’t have any problems with self-confidence when you’re out wearing your sweatpants.

Don’t be afraid that people will judge you. It’s often that other joggers just like you have started the same. Make small steps, and the change will be evident. If you have a kitchen calendar, jot down the days where you want to go out running. It’s okay to miss one every three weeks or so, but don’t make a habit out of not sticking to your workout routine because as you know and as Charles Duhigg so greatly puts it in his books, we’re creatures of habit.

If you find no sense in exercising at all and you really don’t think of it as a source of entertainment or for de-stressing, you’ll really have to make a set of rules and abide by them to make sure that you do not give up working out entirely.

ATV snow plows – safety tips

Posted on

Owning a snow plow can be a fantastic thing, especially during long hard winters. It can help you keep your driveway clean, so you can access the roads in an instant in case you have to make an urgent trip to your local hospital or in any other unforeseen situation.

They are great products if you want to take advantage of your ATV’s immense power and to make your life a bit more comfortable, since using a shovel can be hard on your back. Most people agree that combining a snow plow with a wheeled vehicle can be a very efficient solution for moving large amounts of snow fast.

However, just like with any other activity that involves large tools and public spaces, you have to pay attention to some safety guidelines, if you want to have a smooth experience. Down below I reveal what you can do to make sure that your life will be made easier and not harder.

First of all, you need to invest in a high-quality ATV snow plow. There’s no doubt about that. If the item you buy is made of sturdy materials and it is made to respect the highest quality standards, it means it won’t break and scare you.

This above-average construction quality suggests no piece of the product will fall down and in between the wheels of your ATV whenever you hit something substantial.

Equipment that falls apart is not the only factor that can lead to losing control of the vehicle. If you don’t have the right tires for winter and icy roads, you can easily smash into the nearest tree or pole. That’s why you should change summer tires with winter tires.

The same safety measure applies when it comes to excessive speeds. Never speed up more than necessary if the road is slippery and if there are children in the area. Kids can be quite surprising, so always let your family know what you’re planning to do ahead of time so they can stay inside.

If you want to take things even further, you can buy a helmet to wear whenever you are on snow removing duty. Quality helmets protect your head against blunt trauma and will save your life in case of a collision with another vehicle. They can also protect your skull in case you slip on ice.

While you are at it, you can also invest in a pair of goggles. This way you make sure ice bits and snow won’t get into your eyes and blind you. Moreover, snow is notorious for the fact that it contains bacteria, so even if a little gets into your eyes you can still get an infection, even if it doesn’t hurt your eyeballs.
